ISFAR - Institute for the Study of French-Australian Relations Inc.

The Institute for the Study of French-Australian Relations (ISFAR) was founded in 1985, following the successful French Presence in Victoria 1800 – 1901 exhibition held in 1984.

It has the purpose of serving as a resource centre data bank in all areas of French-Australian relations – historical as well as contemporary – and in the sciences and technology as well as in the humanities. Its meetings and colloquia cover a wide range of activities, reflecting the broad spectrum of interest of its members. It publishes a six monthly publication Explorations, which is devoted to recording significant and interesting historical and cultural events impacting on French - Australian liaisons. In addition, the Institute organises a number of social, educational and cultural occasions each year. Most of the events are conducted in English.

ISFAR is a non-political, non-profit making organisation connected with French, Italian & Spanish studies at the University of Melbourne. It is managed by a committee whose membership includes representation from Victoria’s universities, the State Library of Victoria and other institutions interested in French-Australian relations.
